IT-company "Evotor" specializes in the production of online cash registers (more than 650,000 devices throughout Russia), owns the largest operator of fiscal data in the country "Platform OFD" and provides more than 500 services for business management. In a column for Forbes, Evotor's founder and CEO Andrey Romanenko tells what part of the enterprises, according to the operator, did not return to service after a three-month lockdown, why revenue growth in the first weeks after opening is not a reason for joy, but an entrepreneurial “pestilence” should be expected by the end of the year.

Every fourth entrepreneur in Russia uses Evotor online cash registers and cloud services. Since the beginning of the pandemic, we have been keeping our finger on the pulse: according to online cash registers, we watched how the business collapsed in April, and now we see how the indicators of retail outlets are gradually recovering.

The main restrictions due to the pandemic are being removed from business, but even after that, not all resume work. According to Evotor's data, about 20% of retail and service enterprises of small and medium-sized businesses still do not work in Russia, if we take the number of companies operating in early March as a starting point. In none of the regions has the number of retail outlets recovered to its previous levels, and in some regions up to 50% of the facilities do not work (in Tuva, for example, 54%, in Chechnya, 44%).

In order to better understand how the situation will develop further, we decided to talk with entrepreneurs who have “frozen” their business. For the study, we chose one of the affected industries - the beauty industry - and conducted a survey among 100 owners and directors of non-working Moscow beauty salons and spas about what prevented them from resuming work after quarantine.

A bunch of problems

In Moscow, beauty salons were allowed to work from June 9, but, according to Evotor, by July 1, about 16% of establishments had not opened. The number of spas in the capital fell by 30% (they could reopen their doors from June 23).

The poll showed that 36% of owners of out-of-service salons do not plan to resume their business. Several respondents said they had already sold the company.

Another 34% of those surveyed planned to open in July, 7% - in August or September, 23% did not specify the opening date.

Most non-working salons have a whole bunch of problems. All entrepreneurs faced financial difficulties due to the pandemic in one way or another, but only 43% of salon managers were unable to open because of these difficulties. The quarantine lasted too long. “They went into negative territory,” “there was no airbag,” “no money,” the entrepreneurs explain.

For three months of downtime, many have accumulated rental debt. Far from all the owners of the premises agreed to meet the tenants. This is despite the fact that the Moscow mayor's office promised the landlords financial assistance equal to the amount of property tax, land tax and rent for this period (if they reduce the rental rate by at least 50% from the first day of the month when the tenant stopped working).

It was not possible to agree with the owners of rented premises 38% of the respondents. The entrepreneurs admitted that they could not get discounts on rental payments for the period of downtime, and for some in June they even increased the rental rate. Because of this, some of the owners of the salons had to move, and others, a conflict with the landlord, pushed them to close the business.

What kind of business is the most profitable to do: modern ideas and options for own entrepreneurship

“There has probably never been a harder year in my entrepreneurial life. Revenue fell 65-70% year over year. In 2021, my father died of the coronavirus. And our whole family has been ill - we understand what it is. Restrictive measures helped save lives, that's great and right. But doing business is not easier because of this, ”says Pavel Ponikarovskiy, owner of the Krasnoyarsk network of Lumen cinemas.

The year coming to an end turned out to be difficult for the overwhelming majority of small Russian entrepreneurs, often even “changing shoes in the air” and the production of masks and antiseptics that were in short supply at the beginning of the pandemic did not help - Ponikarovsky, for example, to save the business, sewed masks straight in movie theaters, but still ends the year with a loss of about 25 million rubles.

According to the operator of fiscal data "Platform OFD" (serves more than 1 million online cash registers in Russia), the volume of sales of small and medium-sized businesses during the pandemic fell to 91% compared to last year. Restaurants and bars, as well as hairdressing salons, beauty salons (88%) and the sale of clothing and footwear (90%) suffered the most during the height of the lockdown.

Not all companies survived the pandemic - according to the estimates of SKB. ontour ”, the number of individual entrepreneurs and legal entities in the segment of small and medium-sized businesses in all studied industries (catering, baby products, electrical goods, etc.) for the year decreased to 15% and in the vast majority of cases exceeded the number of closures in 2021. The only exception was the “Clothes” segment, in which the number of enterprises fell more strongly last year than this year. In the same segment, there is a local growth in the number of companies in June-August 2021. “It can be assumed that the situation is due to two factors: the change in the main OKVED organization to be included in the list of the most affected industries, and a decrease in business volumes, which led to the inclusion of once large players in the register of small and medium-sized enterprises,” explains Vladimir Savelyev, an analyst at large data in the company "SKB. ontour ".

If one cafe on weekdays brought an average of 60,000-80,000 rubles in revenue per day, now it is only 7,000 rubles.
