Many people prefer natural house wine over store-bought wines. Drinking wine in moderation can improve appetite and reduce the risk of developing heart disease. Most often, such a drink is made from grapes, less often from apricots or other fruits or berries. In the southern regions, making homemade wine is a great idea to start a business.
Step-by-step plan for starting a homemade wine business: where to start
The prerequisites for making homemade wine are access to raw materials (grapes) and understanding of technology. Homemade wine is especially popular in tourist destinations and resorts. Please note that winemaking is a seasonal business, as grapes are harvested only once a year.
The production technology is not very complex, but to organize a full-fledged business, it is important to study the specifics of this industry.
- find suppliers of sugar and fruit (or grow grapes on your own),
- select a plot and premises (rent or buy);
- register a business, obtain a license and the necessary permits;
- conclude an employment contract;
- purchase fermentation bottles.
What equipment to choose for making homemade wine
Maintaining the temperature is important for home wine production. Most often they use a dark basement or cellar. You will also need containers of different sizes - bottles, pots, barrels, but in no case metal. For dishes, materials such as wood or glass are suitable, in extreme cases, plastic.
You will also need a water seal, a press and a juicer. You can buy a special electric harvester. You also need a thermometer and a hygrometer to control the indoor climate, and an alcoholometer and a hydrometer to measure the strength of wine and wort, respectively.
Bottles for wine fermentation must be thoroughly rinsed, otherwise the quality of the product will be affected.
Winemaking has long attracted people as a simple hobby or a set business. At the same time, residents of Russia create a very high demand for homemade quality wine, often preferring it to purchased bottles on the shelves of grocery stores. Nevertheless, a novice entrepreneur will certainly need to familiarize himself with the regulations and legislation of the country in order to open his own completely legal business and not have problems with the authorities in the future. At the same time, it is also useful to find out the opinion of already working producers at home, who will give practical advice on whether it is possible to sell homemade wine in Russia.
Peculiarities of product sales
Experienced entrepreneurs note that the situation in the country is complicated by several factors. For example, at the moment the sale of private wine is prohibited, and therefore many position their product as an ordinary drink without specifying its properties. For small businesses, it is often enough to register as an individual entrepreneur. However, the most important point lies in the choice of the correct OKVED codes, that is, those that are indicated as the planned activity.
Regardless of the chosen method by which you can sell homemade wine, you should indicate the option "Selling products of your own production". You can mention the points that are related to the sale of drinks. But do not designate future activities as "Making and selling wine." The option called “Selling products of our own production” is enough to supply alcohol to various small shops and shops, local cafes and restaurants.
Excerpts from production laws
Such activities are mainly dictated by the Federal Law "On state regulation of the production and circulation of ethyl alcohol, alcoholic and alcohol-containing products and on limiting the consumption (drinking) of alcoholic products." This article first appeared under number 171 of November 22, 1995. Item 11 is worth considering because it talks about who has the right to make wine.
Individuals are prohibited from setting up the production of any alcoholic beverages. Home-made production will be considered illegal in accordance with Article 14. of the Administrative Code, according to which production in non-industrial conditions for the purpose of subsequent sale is punishable by a fine from 1.5 to 2 thousand rubles, as well as the complete confiscation of all drinks. Companies and agricultural complexes that have officially registered their activities, including peasant farms and individual entrepreneurs, can be engaged in production. There is no need for these types of organizations to worry too much about how to sell homemade wine. It is important to note that individual entrepreneurs are allowed to do this activity only if they are recognized by agricultural producers.
Sales & Licensing Questions
Articles No. 16 and 18 of the same Federal Law No. 171 say that it is possible to sell alcoholic products without an official license from the state only in the case of trade in beer, drinks based on it, mead and Poiret. The issuance of the document is carried out exclusively by the authorized authorities. Companies or producers of wine products can obtain the right to conduct this business.
The government also obliges individual entrepreneurs and private farms to follow certain guidelines on how to legally sell homemade wine, champagne-style sparkling drinks and similar products. First of all, such a person must necessarily have a stationary production workshop, as well as a premises where trade is carried out, that is, directly a retail outlet. For retail sales, special cash registers are used, which you will need to independently purchase and install in the hall.

Congratulate me! My first homemade wine making experience was a success! Now, I can proudly tell you how you can create a business on it.
Firstly - a huge plus that this is a business from scratch! If you don't have your own garden, a lot of fruit for making wine can be found in abandoned gardens and summer cottages. You can cook it from anything. I made from apples, pears, plums.
How much raw material is needed: different figures are given in books and on websites, but as a result, my wine volume turned out to be more than expected. To be profitable, pick fruits according to the season: apricots, cherries, currants, apples, strawberries, pears, grapes, plums ...
The principle of making wine is always the same, the only differences will be in the amount of sugar. The more fruit you collect, the better! Processing them is not at all difficult and fast enough, so that you will not spend a lot of work, regardless of the volume.
What you may need to buy is large containers. A friend gave them to me for free. The size of the container depends on the planned amount of wine.
After collecting fruits, we start processing them. It is important not to wash them. Plugged or collected from the ground, wipe them with a cloth if there is dirt. For the fermentation of wine, bacteria are needed, which are on the surface.
I didn't mix different fruits, I made each wine separately. Someone advises removing seeds from pears and apples. If it is a cherry or apricot, it is imperative to remove the seeds, since they contain poison.
Now all the fruits must be crushed into gruel - for this I used a Soviet food processor, it is electric and all that remained was to fill in the fruit on time. In the same way, you can do this through an electric meat grinder.
I do not recommend using a juicer for these purposes - as it is not designed for such volumes and produces very little juice.
Next, pour the gruel into bottles and add water. Before using bottles, rinse them well with detergent. This must be done to prevent mold or vinegar bacteria from entering the future wine. If this happens, then the wine will deteriorate and it will not be possible to drink it.
The quantity is calculated using tables and formulas from the Internet. Cover with gauze so that flies don't get caught. We do not touch for 3-4 days, let it stand in a dark and warm place.
You can't buy health, but you can preserve it by eating quality products. The production of quality products in small home businesses has been in demand at all times. Whether it be homemade cheese, sausage, chocolate, baked goods or wine, all of these products have a huge advantage over manufactured products. Manufacturing quality products is a good way to make money. But how do you organize home production? The answer to this question can only be given by an entrepreneur who opened such a production.
A Reconomica journalist asked a real businessman who started with a regular garage and now has the prospect of opening a large home winery. How he did it and what difficulties he had to overcome, read the article.
An idea has come, or is a calling awakened?
Greetings to all readers. My name is Alexey, I am 46 years old. I was born and raised in the Stavropol Territory. I am engaged in the production of wine and do it for a living. I have a home winery that brings me a good income. My small business turns 10 this year. I'll start my story about my business from the very beginning.
Wine grapes are the main raw material for wine production.
I saw it - I wanted it
In my family, no one has ever made wine or distilled moonshine. I had no knowledge of this matter. The idea to make wine came to me spontaneously. In 2021 I worked as a welder and received a regular salary. Thoughts about their own business were not even allowed.
In 2021, my family and I went to rest on the Black Sea coast. We had the usual planned vacation: the beach, excursions, walks and visits to local cafes. And so, on one of the excursions, we visited a private winery, where they showed us home production and conducted a wine tasting. The winery was located in the courtyard of a private house and occupied 60 square meters. It had two branches. One contained plastic containers, huge bottles and specific equipment. In another room, there were two large stainless steel tables and several dozen plastic trays. Finished wine and other ripening products were in the basement under the house. Everything there was filled with wooden barrels and glass bottles.
The private winery really gave me a thrill. Everything was home-like, simple and clear.
The walls of the room were made of natural stone and whitewashed. The roof is covered with tiles, and all partitions and doors are made of hand-hewn planks. This design created a special atmosphere that made the homemade wine even tastier.
The excursion program included not only wine tasting, but also lunch in the home dining room. It so happened that the owner of the winery was at dinner. I struck up a conversation with him, where over a glass of tart wine I asked many questions. I was interested in everything: from production technology to paperwork and wine sales. I was so carried away by the process that upon arrival at the hotel I opened my laptop and spent most of the night collecting information about wine production.
The main problem in the production and sale of homemade wine is the state regulation of the issue. In Russia, there is a state monopoly on the production of alcoholic beverages, huge taxes are paid by those enterprises that produce alcohol of even the minimum strength. To open the production of alcoholic beverages, it is necessary to study legislation, taxation, production requirements and many other nuances. It is very difficult for small wine-making enterprises to survive in modern conditions.
Private winemaking is quite seriously developed abroad, for example, in Spain. Grapes grow there in almost every yard of every region of the country. Plantations, like wine, are taxed, but even with a wine cost of 1.6 euros per liter, production remains profitable. There is a system of incentives for small businesses, especially for the production of natural food. And private wine producers significantly support the country's economy with taxes. In our country, unfortunately, such a policy is not supported; a private winery may be more likely to be ranked as the production of moonshine and bring the owner to justice. Therefore, when organizing this type of business, entrepreneurs resort to numerous tricks.
How to register a wine business
These are the advice colleagues give to those who are planning to open their own wine company. When you fill out the form when registering an individual entrepreneur, you must select OKVED "sales of products of your own production." In this case, you can count on not such close attention than with the line in the column "type of activity" with the text: production and sale of wine. Homemade wine of our own production can be sold quite widely: in local restaurants, cafes, in the market, in small shops and shops specializing in the sale of good wine. But the sale of private wine is prohibited in our country, remember this. Therefore, position sales as home-made drinks, do not use the word "wine" at all.
How to sell your own wine
After all the necessary documents are completed, you can start trading. The cheapest way is to supply wine in large cans, and to position it as a "home draft", this for many buyers is the standard of quality, as a result of which sales increase.
If you decide to sell wine in bottles, then you will need to come out with an offer to buy in stores that have alcohol sales departments. This is a less profitable option for the manufacturer, but a rather prestigious step.
What you need to make wine
Selecting a grape variety is another critical step. As a rule, for a private farm, several varieties are selected for the production of white, red, and rosé wines of various varieties. Find out which wine is the most needed in your area and buy the vine.
Be sure to divide your vineyard site into zones, and plan the right lighting for each variety. Consider watering and winter storage of the vine. It should be remembered that a good harvest of grapes can only grow in the southern regions, where high temperatures and high humidity prevail throughout the year. The location of the vineyard in such a zone means not only good quality wine, but also the presence of tourists, that is, a large number of potential buyers of this product.
Simultaneously with the production of grape wine, it is possible to organize the production of berry, fruit, and fruit wines, which are also very popular.
Wine production requires simple equipment and containers. Press, crusher, fermentation tanks, filtration tanks and some other devices are quite acceptable. The most important thing is to know the technology of wine production, and then you will receive a quality product in any case. Remember that industrial production of wine requires serious powerful equipment. Don't buy home installations for large volumes. For bottling wine, it will also be necessary to purchase an installation, there are various equipment for packaging large volumes, and for bottling in small containers.
There are many subtleties to be learned in order to provide a traditional or original bouquet for your wine. For this, many have their own family recipes that are passed down from generation to generation. If there were no winemakers in your family, then you need to find someone from whom you will buy several recipes, it is better to look for such people among winemakers in distant settlements, in villages and farms. Having an original recipe from a certain area, you can not only make quality wine, you can very clearly use the name of this area in the name of the wine brand, in advertising materials and videos, as a means for the fastest promotion of your product.
