Intellect map: how to organize a sewing workshop

I will also tell you examples of my clients who, having absolutely no knowledge in the sewing business, organized and organize these small industries. Basically, these are the owners of some businesses or the owners of some retail outlets.

They organize a small workshop for their business, sew clothes that will be sold. If you have such a situation, then you can also earn money with your workshop without having professional skills. I will also tell you how to do this.

Self-expression and personal style go along the same path hand in hand, however, it is not always possible to have unique things and clothes in the modern world. Huge hypermarkets, chain stores and franchises sell the same collections not only in different cities, but even all over the world.

This situation puts the sewing studio at its peak of popularity, creating a very profitable niche for entrepreneurs. Below we presented a business plan for the studio, where we gave approximate calculations and talked about the nuances of small production.

Clothing production, mini atelier needs not only a creative approach, but also a detailed calculation, which is the main task of a business plan. By the way, the business of sewing and repairing clothes can bypass such a costly issue as renting a room; at first, a workshop can be opened at home.

Sewing Atelier Specialization

It is possible to open a tailoring atelier of both a wide profile and a narrow specialization. Apparel manufacturing can choose a niche such as:

  • Atelier for general tailoring and repair of clothes
  • Sewing children's clothing
  • Creation of wedding, evening and concert dresses
  • Creation of hats, bags and other accessories
  • Production of products from natural and artificial fur, leather
  • Creation of theatrical, dance and carnival costumes
  • Creation of corporate identity, uniforms, overalls
  • Clothes for advertising campaigns
  • Home textile manufacturing
  • Military uniforms sewing
  • Sports and tourist clothing sewing
  • Decorating costumes
  • Making costumes for pets
  • Making school uniforms

Recommended workshop room standards

So, when wondering how to open an atelier, you need to think about renting a room and its standards. Mini-production is best located in areas of high traffic, in shopping centers, household service complexes, on the first floors of residential buildings.

You can open a tailor shop for tailoring and repairing clothes for a start in a room of no more than 50 squares, with successful business there is always the prospect of moving to a more spacious hall. By the way, the move should not cause the loss of clients, so it is better to choose a new room close to the old one.

In order for the atelier to function normally, you need to arrange the following zones in the room:

  • Reception area, where the fitting room will be located, as well as samples of fabric and accessories.
  • Cutting and sewing area, compartment for pre-cutting fabrics and ironing.
  • Sanitary rooms (toilet, pantry, dining room).

It is imperative that the seamstress work place is well lit, the standards for the atelier exceed the standards for living quarters by 5 times. It is also necessary to provide for the fact that professional sewing equipment requires a voltage of 380 volts.

Inna Grekhova, owner of the GiovineZZa atelier in Novosibirsk, has been combining her main work with sewing clothes at home for several years. After graduation, she actually opened her business from scratch, spending only 200,000 rubles. for basic things. Today she is seriously thinking about starting a supply of fabrics and opening a school for those who want to learn how to sew.

Inna Grekhova spoke in an interview with Kontur about how her business functions in conditions of a shortage of good fabrics and accessories, how she replenishes the customer base and why she went to Moscow to see the outstanding designer Vyacheslav Zaitsev. urnal.

Hobby business

Both educations that I received are directly related to the specifics of my business. By my first education I am a designer-fashion designer, according to the second I am a designer for individual orders, which means that I can sew clothes individually for each client, depending on the physiological characteristics, structure and age of a person.

After graduating from the Omsk State Institute of Service, I seriously thought about opening my own business. Before that, for about 10 years, I sewed at home, I already had regular clients. And then the moment came when I decided to quit my job and open a GiovineZZa studio, started everything from scratch. In March it will be possible to celebrate a small anniversary - five years.

First difficulties and work with the client

At first, clients came to their homes, I lived an hour's drive from the center. Then I rented an office in the city center - and faced the first difficulties. Firstly, renting premises implies additional expenses, so the price tag for our services had to be increased. Secondly, as it turned out, it became inconvenient for some clients to get to the studio, so the client base decreased. But those clients who were not afraid of the changes and stayed, continued to order clothes and recommend me to their friends.

The client base was replenished thanks to word of mouth. I think this is the best advertisement for the atelier. At one time, I invested in both flyers and banners, but, as experience has shown, all this does not work. The base grows only thanks to positive customer reviews.

The number of points of sale is of great importance for business development. I try to work with customers on various mutually beneficial terms: I hand over things to someone for sale, to someone I sew on order, there are also wholesalers who buy things from me in large quantities, so I make things under the order with customer tags ... There are a number of regular customers who order things for the season - spring-autumn, summer, winter. These are mainly dance and sports schools. There is also a separate direction - individual sewing of products: women's and men's clothing, repair and sewing of fur and leather products. I also create exclusive designer items from Pavloposad shawls (hats, vests, ponchos) and hand them over for sale in Novosibirsk stores.

The contingent of customers is diverse - you have to adjust and work individually for each. For example, I work with clients from Moscow and St. Petersburg, who once came to Novosibirsk, got to know me and still order clothes from me. I send orders to them by parcels.

We have four seamstresses working on a permanent basis. Of course, this is very small. But when I receive large orders, I involve factories that help to make 200-300 pieces of products in a short time.

The starting capital for starting a business amounted to 200,000 rubles. This money was needed for the purchase of sewing machines, tables, rent of premises and repairs. As for the salary, everything is simple: my seamstresses receive interest on orders.

Business plan or how to open a tailoring and repair shop from scratch

A well-written business plan is a guide to action, which records all the steps of a businessman. In the process of preparing a plan, an entrepreneur solves the following tasks:

  • analysis of demand, competitors, drawing up a list of services provided and their cost;
  • developing a concept, choosing a specialization of an enterprise;
  • drawing up a list of starting and current expenses;
  • forecasting income, net profit, profitability;
  • risk analysis - studying the impact of the ruble instability, falling solvency of the population and other factors;
  • drawing up a program hiring employees;
  • development of an advertising campaign.

A business plan will help answer the question of how to open your own atelier from scratch. In the process of drawing up a plan, the future entrepreneur foresees possible areas of work, calculates the estimated income.

Atelier specialization

To start a sewing business, you need to choose a promising line of business.

Thus, the atelier can specialize in sewing designer products, fulfilling individual orders or repairing clothes.

Selection and rental of premises

The main criterion for choosing a room is its location. Preferably a high-traffic location in a business center or close to a sleeping area so that visitors can look into the workshop on their way to work or school.

How to create a home studio

There has always been such a small business as a home studio. Many famous couturiers started with this. Once in our country, their popularity was caused by a lack of fashionable clothes, now, rather, by the desire to dress not only fashionably and stylishly, but also so that the thing fits perfectly.

Although you can find many beautiful and fashionable items in specialized stores and boutiques, customers often leave empty-handed. Someone cannot find the right size, someone is not satisfied with the colors, the abundance of details or the quality of the product. In this case, a person has only one way out - to contact a tailor shop. I myself also use this service from time to time, because the industry, in principle, does not produce clothes for women whose waist is twice as thin as the hips.

In general, such a business as a home atelier is in demand both in big cities and small towns. This is why many people think that making a profit from tailoring is easy enough. But in practice, a novice businessman is faced with a bunch of problems, because in order for a home studio to bring stable income, a long way has to be done.

Where to start sewing?

Before you start equipping your home atelier, carefully analyze the market for services in your city or town. After all, if in the area of your residence there is already a company engaged in such a business, and most importantly: it does it well, you are unlikely to be able to earn anything. Therefore, it is necessary to find a residential area where no one offers such services. The ideal location for a sewing workshop is considered to be sleeping areas, where many people live.

If you liked a place, be sure to ask:

  • how many people live in the area of your choice (if possible, try to find out their income level);
  • the amount of payment in other ateliers;
  • are there any vacant premises?

Where to host the atelier?

At first, it is quite possible to sheathe clients at home, which many do. But if the living space does not allow you to do business at home, then try to find a room on the first floor of some residential high-rise building. Another convenient option is premises in the local market, and it is important to choose a place with good traffic. For a start, a small area is enough, because until there are regular customers, you will not be able to pay rent for a large space. At the same time, try to create maximum comfort there, so that you and your clients feel comfortable. This will help you stay productive, while the clients have a beautiful room, attention to their problems and high-quality completed orders, will make them want to come back to you again and again.

For comfortable work, you should have the following premises (or corners):
