The production of chips for smoking - a business that attracts entrepreneurs
You are fundamentally mistaken if you still consider sawdust to be production waste. Raw materials of this type are a powerful source for a new successful business. And it will be much more beneficial if recycled rather than incinerated or thrown away. We will tell you how to use sawdust correctly and become a little richer.
Pressed pallet production
Warehouses and construction sites cannot do without equipment for storing goods and building materials. Considering that today logistics centers are developing at an accelerated pace, the production of pallets is becoming incredibly in demand. The pallet park is always in need of constant renewal. Conventional wooden pallets today can be replaced with compressed sawdust pallets. The load-carrying capacity of products is enhanced by stiffening ribs and thickening of the structure. They can carry loads from two to ten tons.
Manufacturing process: first, the raw material is crushed to a fraction of 3-7 mm and dried to a moisture content of 8-10%. Then it is combined with urea-formaldehyde resin. The mixed composition is pressed at a temperature of 220-250 degrees and a pressure of up to 1500 tons. The process of pressing one pallet takes 5-10 minutes. The advantages of such a product are more than enough:
- Made from natural raw materials, suitable for export, as they do not require fumigation, quarantine and phytosanitary control;
- Suitable for multiple use - sawdust pallets last a long time , do not rot, moisture resistant;
- Have a compact size, easy to store and store.
A big plus is the simplicity of the manufacturing process. The downside is expensive equipment. To obtain such pallets, a press line is required.
Production of fuel briquettes
The briquette will be of high quality only if the fraction of the material is observed: the smaller it is, the denser and better the finished product. Here the principle is the same as in the manufacture of pressed pallets (wrote above). And the moisture content of raw materials is also important - no more than 14%. Otherwise, the briquette will simply not be formed. The process of producing briquettes is simple: the dried crushed raw material enters the baling chamber and is compressed under high pressure. The lignin released in this process helps to compact the material without additional funds.
To start the production of briquettes from sawdust, shavings or grinding dust, you will need a workshop or workshop of a small area and a briquetting press. Many manufacturers prioritize the RUF press of the BP-600 model (BP-420A), which occupies 4 m2, and together with the packing table - 20 m2. The operator can work simultaneously with two working presses. On the packing table there is a device for packing 10 kg in polyethylene. A sealing device is also mounted there. The control of the external feed reducer is provided by the electrician of the machine - it is connected to the control cabinet. The machine is equipped with an automated feed control device. The design of the equipment is based on vibration damping pads, allowing the unit to be placed with a load of three tons on a flat floor. Operation of the machine includes an additional worm conveyor involved in transporting sawdust to the press.

Chips production technology
Chips for smoking production is a business that, with a rational approach, provides a stable income. Smoked meats production workshops, as well as mini smokehouses, constantly need different types of chips from fruit and hardwood. Therefore, the demand for it is consistently high.
Without wood chips that create a thick, uniform smoke for smoking with the desired aromatic notes, it is impossible to achieve the unique aroma of meat, fish and poultry. It is unprofitable for the smokehouses to make it for many reasons:
- high costs of organizing additional production;
- ineffective waste of time;
- lack of the necessary wood species in the region.
Accordingly, they need a good range and reliable supply of this woodworking product. Considering that the smoking business has been actively developing in recent years, the need for a wide range of high-quality smoke chips will increase.
Manufacturing technology of this consumable for smoking is simple. This can be either an independent production or a separate site at a woodworking enterprise. The working cycle can be adjusted for different volumes of finished products. It uses crushing equipment, shredding and packaging machines, dryers and conveyors, hand tools. More on this will be discussed later.
The method of production of chips for smoking is determined by:
- the estimated volumes of its production,
- the types of raw materials used.
When processing small volumes of wood waste, chippers (wood chips) are used for soft and hard wood species. Such equipment can produce 600 kg or more of finished chips of a custom fraction per hour. Hand tools - axes and cleavers - are practically not used on an industrial scale due to their low productivity.
Large enterprises use a set of equipment for the production of chips for smoking. The raw material is debarked wood (the trunk with the bark removed), which is processed in several stages. The output is high quality wood chips in a size that is considered the best and most expensive on the market.
Equipment for the release of chips
The process for the release of this woodworking material involves the use of a complete high-performance line. It includes:
After wood processing, a lot of unnecessary things remain. You can make money from the disposal and recycling of waste.
There are many ways to do this business, from using shredded shavings as fillers in rodent cages or cat litter boxes to making furniture sets.
Selling packaged sawdust is unlikely to generate significant revenue, but with other business ideas, you can start a profitable business. Business needs investment.
Those who start a business will have no problems with raw materials.
It is profitable to create a mini-plant for the production of fuel blocks and pellets: gas and electricity are becoming more expensive, the owners of small businesses and houses are looking for new ways of heating, and the use of firewood is irrational and not environmentally friendly. The production of chipboards is also relevant - building materials are always in price.
If scaling is planned, it is better to open a limited liability company and choose a simplified taxation regime according to the “income minus expenses” scheme. This will have to spend 10,000 rubles.
Licensing of the processing business is not required. But product certification is needed. The price of the procedure depends on the type of products manufactured. It will take 30,000 rubles to certify the manufacture of pellets.
How to choose a seat
The area of the future plant depends on:
Now sawdust is not waste, but raw material that can be effectively and efficiently used. In addition, the law obliges them to dispose of them, and not just throw them away, under the threat of large fines.
We will analyze the 3 most interesting ways of processing sawdust into a finished product.
th place: Production of pressed pallets from sawdust
Various plant raw materials are suitable for the manufacture of pressed pallets - sawdust, straw, stems of some plants.
So, the carrying capacity of a pallet can be easily increased by as much as five times - from two to ten tons - if you use stiffening ribs, and the structure itself is thickened.
The pallet manufacturing process takes place in several stages. First, the raw material is crushed to a fraction of 3-7 millimeters, then dried to a moisture content of 8-10% and mixed with urea-formaldehyde resin, for example, KF-MT-15. Final pressing is carried out at a temperature of 220-250 and a pressure of up to 1500 tons per pallet, and it takes from 5 to 10 minutes.
As a result, you get economical and easy-to-use products. Let's describe the advantages of sawdust pallets only briefly:
- do not require fumigation, quarantine and phyto-sanitary control if used as an export container;
- can be reused;
- completely recyclable, which meets European standards;
- moisture resistant, not subject to rapid decay, have good fire resistance;
- take up little space during storage.
The productivity of one press can reach 180 pieces per day, or 60 pieces per shift. Pressing takes a lot of time, but the process is automatic, so one person will be enough to service three presses.
This worthy idea ranks third in our ranking for one simple reason: the cost of equipment for the production of pressed pallets is quite high.
Mulch is used to protect the soil from erosion, retain moisture in it, fertilize the soil, and, as a rule, inhibit the growth of weeds. When using mulch, the roots of plants are not afraid of temperature changes, it perfectly protects in frosts, excludes fruit rotting.
In addition to the many advantages of mulch, colored mulch is also a worthy decoration of the infield. All of the above qualities of colored wood chips have long been used in Europe and have great success. The production of colored mulch in the CIS countries is not only a rather promising line of business, but also a good solution to the problems of recycling wood processing waste.
Painted wood chips are successfully used in landscape design. It is an excellent decorative material. Dyed mulch can serve as an excellent surface for park, walking and sports tracks. Chip-covered paths are always clean due to its water-permeability and dirt absorption properties.
With its help, you can create original and very beautiful drawings in landscape design, various geometric patterns or flat surfaces made in the same tone on backyards, intra-house and other areas. The lower layer of wood chips, when rotting, only improves the structure of the soil. Rotten mulch does not need to be replaced with a new one; it is enough just to pour a new one over the old one. Based on this, we can conclude that once having bought colored wood chips, a year later, another, the buyer will definitely come to buy a new batch of colored wood chips.
Now more about the business itself.
How to start your small business
1. Purchase equipment that will grind wood. This equipment is called a garden shredder, but it should be noted that they shred in different ways. Some simply chop the branches into pieces, and some give out the chips. Such equipment is quite expensive (depending on the power), therefore, as an option, you can make it yourself (there are a lot of instructions and videos on how to make a garden shredder on the Internet).
2. Raw materials (branches), which will be shredded into chips, can be found in the nearest forest belt (dead wood). If for some reason this is not possible, then you can agree with the sawmill to purchase waste from them. But as you can imagine, this will only increase the cost of the final product.
How to dye wood chips in different colors and shades
The process of painting mulch looks something like this: pour the chips into a container, into which we then pour the stain, color solution or other coloring matter. Since the chips will rise above the liquid level, and some part of it will remain unpainted, it is necessary to stir it periodically (as an option, a concrete mixer is suitable for this purpose). After dyeing, the chips are removed and dried.
One cubic meter of mulch will be enough to cover 10 square meters of surface with a thickness of about 1 cm.
