Own business: production of crayons

Everyone wants to increase their profits, and therefore thinks about different ways of earning. There are many options. If you look around, there are many opportunities for additional income. Where to find new business ideas? Here they are - right in front of you. Even the dumbest idea can turn into a profitable business. Today we'll talk about how to make money selling chalk.

Chalk is one of the varieties of weakly cemented carbonate rock. It consists of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate, and a non-carbonate part (metal oxides) is also present.

Chalk is safe in case of fire and explosions, as well as non-toxic. It is usually transported in bulk or packaged. You can wholesale chalk from an authorized dealer. Then it should be packaged in separate packages and sold.

Let's first find out what purposes chalk is used for, and in what directions to start selling chalk.

Chalk is used in industry:

This is the paint and varnish, cable industry, as well as the production of rubber products. In the production of plastic products, cables, linoleum, glass industry, it is used as a filler.

Business idea: how to make money selling chalk

What is chalk made of? What kind of connection is this? You will find answers to these and other questions in the article. It can be called “the witness of epochs” that disappeared tens of millions of years ago. This compound has a biological source, therefore it has physical and chemical properties. What chalk is made of, we will find out below.

Features of occurrence

Few know what chalk is made of. Let's pay attention to its origin in nature. When dinosaurs lived on Earth (and this was about 80 million years ago), there was the Cretaceous period. The tiny seas of that time were inhabited by millions of small molluscs, which built their skeletons and shells from calcium in the water. In the bottom sediments, the remains of creatures accumulated in layers of many meters and transformed into white chalk.

Mineral structure

Many people ask, "What is chalk made of?" As a percentage, the following components of this mineral are distinguished:

  • Up to 10% of chalk is found in the shells of tiny foraminifera mollusks.
  • About 10% are fragments of skeletons of multicellular animals, the simplest creatures that accumulate calcium in tissues.
  • Fine crystalline calcite constitutes up to 50%.
  • Up to 3% - lump chalk (in the form of silicates). It is presented in the form of geological debris (remnants of rocks, sand) carried by currents and winds into the chalk deposits.
  • Up to 40% of calcium salts are in the fragments of algae growths. Microscopic living matter in the seas is coccolithophores that create lime mud.

Chemical composition

So, you already know what stone is used to make chalk. Now let's look at its composition. It is known that the white mineral contains up to 50% calcium oxide, and about 2% magnesium oxide. What substances give color to this mineral?

Chalk can sometimes even contain 3-4% aluminum oxide, as well as some iron oxides. In this case, it will have a pink or red tint.

It is believed that the chemical formula of this rock is identical to the formula for potassium carbonate - CaCO3.

Almost all types of composite materials that are used in various fields have different fillers in their composition. The latter differ in chemical composition and origin (natural and artificial).

They are added to composite materials, first of all, to reduce the cost of the latter and / or to give them certain properties. Fillers can have a reinforcing, armor or abrasive effect, dilute or, conversely, thicken the mixture, stabilize and harden the material.

However, regardless of the origin of the fillers, they are always used in the form of fine powders.

The most popular are natural and organic fillers (chalk, limestone, talc, barite, kaolin, asbestos, etc.). And one of the most common types among them is fine chalk (calcium carbonate).

This filler is used in the production of dry building mixtures, plasters, grouts, plastics, paints and varnishes, rubber, paper, cables, etc. The main suppliers of chalk for rubber, cable, polymer, paint and varnish and other industries are the enterprises for its production located in the Belgorod and Voronezh regions.

The demand for chalk fillers is increasing every year. Meanwhile, its production, on the contrary, not only does not grow, but also vice versa, in some periods decreases, which is associated with various problems that slow down the development of the industry.

The location of the dispersed chalk suppliers is of great importance, because the further away they are, the higher the transportation costs and the higher the production cost will be. However, for buyers from Western Europe, the issue of the location of the supplier is not so important. The European sales market now exceeds 5 million tons per year.

The most expensive are chalk powders, which are distinguished by high dispersion and whiteness. No less expensive surface-modified (for example, hydrophobic) powders.

Chalk is produced in two main ways: by crushing rocks and sediment (natural or natural calcium carbonate) and chemical precipitation (chemically precipitated calcium carbonate).

Use crayons and a variety of cafes and restaurants. They put up special pillars with a black background on the street, and write their advertising proposals on them with crayons. By hand. This appeal works much better for customers than standard and featureless color printing. Here are some more consumers of crayons. And there are many more such examples.

There is probably no person in our country who has never held a chalk in his hands. At least when you were in school or university, you definitely had to write something on a large board more than once. And the tool that you used to draw graphs, geometric shapes, solve equations, or simply write down the necessary words under dictation was ordinary white chalk.

Today this "writing instrument" along with the old blackboards is gradually leaving the stage, handing over the palm to special metal boards and markers. And in more advanced schools, interactive whiteboards are already being installed. Nevertheless, ordinary school chalk is still in demand in various fields. Moreover, not all schools have given up on this traditional instrument yet. This means that the production of crayons, or better - colored crayons, can be a great business idea. This will be discussed below. And let's start with the most important thing. With the technology of making crayons.

How do you get regular chalk?

As for the technology of production (or obtaining) of chalk, it depends on its type. Today there are two types of chalk - pressed and lumpy. The latter type is a natural product, extracted from special natural deposits. The main substance of lump chalk is calcium carbonate. Naturally, this is the highest quality, environmentally friendly and absolutely safe product that can be used in any field of activity (including in schools and even kindergartens). Pressed chalk is made from limestone and starch. This combination allows you to create chalk of a wide variety of shapes and sizes.

First, natural chalk is broken into small pieces, after which all excess impurities are removed. Then the mass is mixed with water and ground on special millstones. Now you need to wait a little until all the stones and sand settle to the bottom, and the pure chalk mass remains on the surface. Heavy impurities are removed, after which this procedure is repeated two more times. The goal is to get the purest possible chalk mix. At the end, the resulting mass is allowed to settle for several hours. The water is drained, and the chalk mixture is dried.

If the resulting mixture crumbles (that is, the chalk will also crumble, which is not good), then glue, dextrin or casein, which is fashionable today, are added to the mass. The last ingredient allows you to make crayons that do not crumble or create dust at all. This means that they are more comfortable to use. And the demand for such a product will be higher. Keep this in mind. By the way, in order for the chalk to become a little softer and better lay down on the surface, oil, wax or a soap solution are added to the chalk powder. The concentration of this or that component depends on the goals pursued. Drawing on asphalt requires harder chalk, while writing on a blackboard requires softer chalk.

After the required mass is received, it remains only to cut it into crayons of the desired shape and size, pack it and send it to the shops. Here's a simple process.

Crayon production

Everything is exactly the same here with only one difference. During the production process, dyes of the desired color are added to the mixture. Let's briefly analyze below how to get crayons of one color or another.

To obtain red crayons, a mixture of madder or cacana with brewer's yeast, milk, oat flour or gum arabic is used. The most intense red color is achieved by mixing two parts of red ocher, one part of carmine with a decoction of milk, oat flour and gum arabic.

Green crayons are obtained in several ways. First, from a mixture of chalky powder with mountain greens and brewer's yeast. Secondly, by adding chrome yellow and Prussian blue. Thirdly, from a mixture of chalk, ultramarine green and yellow cormorant.

For blue crayons, use Parisian blue. So that the color is not too dark and saturated, the blue is diluted with sulfuric acid. Parisian blue is discolored, but after interaction with water it gives the desired precipitate. This precipitate is mixed with chalk powder, soap and dextrin are added.

Small-scale manufacturing as a business Startup options

For people who decide to start their own business, but have limited start-up capital, small-scale production is the ideal solution.

A business that started from small volumes will be more successful in the future, since all the intricacies and risks of own business can be experienced with a small financial investment.
